Teaching activity and holidays of the academic year

Type of programme: University tertiary education

Beginning of the teaching activity:
Bachelor's: Between 4 and 26 September 2017
Master's or a PhD: The beginning of the teaching activity generally occurs between the third week of September and the third week of October.

Teaching activity:
1. Those universities starting no later than 13 September finish their teaching activity just before the Christmas holidays.
2. Those starting later than 13 September finish their teaching activity no later than 19 January.

Particular feature:
University of Salamanca: It divides the academic year in 2 equivalent intervals of 18 weeks, from 1 or 18 September (1st Bachelor year starts afterwards) to 2 February.

Christmas Holidays:
16 days between 23 December 2017 and 7 January 2018

Teaching activity:
Between the end of the Christmas holidays (University of Navarra) or the end of the 1st examination period and the start of May/June examinations: The average is mid-May. Particular features: The earliest ending date is 27 April in Navarra and the latest is mid-June in Salamanca.

Easter Holidays: About 10 days between the third week of March and the first week of April 2018

Summer Holidays: Between the end of June/July examinations and the end of August or late September

Beginning of the teaching activity:

Between mid-September and the beginning of October.

Teaching activity:

From the beginning of the teaching activity to the end of May or last week of June.

Holidays / Christmas:

Christmas: 2 weeks between 23 December 2017 and 7 January 2018.

Easter: About 10 days between the fourth week of March and the first week of April 2018.
Summer: 13 to 16 weeks between June and beginning/mid-September or the beginning of October.

Particular feature: Autonomous Community of Cantabria: the
organization and distribution of the school holidays is somehow different from that of the rest of regional administrations.

Summer holidays

Examinations of the academic year

Type of programme: University tertiary education

Examinations:
• According to the duration of the examinations: It ranges between 2 weeks (University of La Rioja) and 5 weeks (Universities in Galicia).
• According to the starting and the ending dates:
The earliest starting date is 4 December (University of Navarra) and the latest ending date is 6 February (University of Zaragoza).

Particular features:
• The University of Salamanca does not stop classes for exams.
• There is a 3rd extra call in November (2-13) in the University of Extremadura for those students close to ending their studies.

About 1 month between mid-May and the end of June, depending on whether the university conducts their extraordinary examinations in July or in September. There is no teaching activity during this period.
Particular feature: The University of Navarra, between 30 April and 18 June.

Extraordinary examinations:
1. Those universities scheduling extraordinary exams in June spend about 1 month, between the 1st week of June and the last week of July.
2. Those examining in September, no more than 3.5 weeks at the beginning of September 2018.

Type of programme: non-university tertiary education:
  • School year organised into 3 periods of examinations: before Christmas holidays, before Easter holidays and before summer holidays. Schools are free to fix examination dates within those periods.
  • School year is organised into 2 intervals: examinations take place after each interval.
