Beginning of the academic year
According to the Law of the National Education
(Law 1/2011 with subsequent completions), the
university year usually begins on the first
working day of October; it includes two
semesters and ends on 30 September in the
next calendar year.
Teaching activity and holidays of the academic year
The academic year consists of two semesters.
Higher education institutions (HEI) are
autonomous. They fix all periods of teaching
activity, exams and holidays.
The length of the teaching activity (lectures and
practice trainings) differs from one HEI to
another.
Examinations dates and holidays (other than the
officially announced public and religious
holidays) are determined at institutional level.
Examinations of the academic year
The examination dates are determined at
institutional level. Teachers and students are
free to fix the dates for examinations within the
examination sessions established by institutions. End of the academic year
Institutions are autonomous.
