Beginning of the academic year
Universities and Institutes of Technology are
autonomous bodies and start dates may vary but in
general for 2017/18 the academic year starts on
Monday 4 September.
Teaching activity and holidays of the academic year
Teaching activity: The semester is generally a period of 15 weeks, which normally includes 12 weeks teaching. All periods of teaching activity and holidays are individually fixed by each University or Institute.
Holiday: Bank Holiday Monday 30 October 2017, Dates from 18 December 2017 (Christmas)
Teaching activity: 15-22 January to 21-28 April 2018
Holidays: St Patrick's Day 17 March 2018 (Bank holiday Monday 19), Good Friday 30 March 2108, Easter Monday 2 April 2018, May Bank Holiday 7 May 2018
Examinations of the academic year
In December, starting from the week of 4th to 11th. Each University or Institute manages this separately.
Usually 2 weeks (11-12 working days) in May. Each University or Institute manages this separately.
End of the academic year
Universities and Institutes of Technology are
autonomous bodies. For Universities, the academic
year generally ends at the date the new one begins.
For Institutes of Technology, the academic year
generally ends in June.
