Beginning of the academic year

Institutions are autonomous. As a rule the beginning of the academic year is 1 September.

Teaching activity and holidays of the academic year

Teaching activity:

Institutions are autonomous.

Each semester usually covers 20 weeks. The last four weeks within are allocated to an examination session. In some institutions, the semester can last longer (up to 22 weeks) or shorter (17 weeks). In most institutions, the spring semester starts at the beginning of February.

Holidays:

Institutions are autonomous.

All institutions have Christmas holidays usually from 25 December to the beginning of January.

The winter break begins at the end of the autumn semester, right after the winter examination session (usually end of January/beginning of February) and lasts 1 or 2 weeks.

Most institutions have Easter holidays lasting a few days in the spring semester.

Summer holidays usually start after the end of the spring semester and last maximum 2 months, normally between 1 July and 31 August.

Examinations of the academic year

The last four weeks of each semester are allocated to examination sessions.

End of the academic year

Institutions are autonomous. As a rule, the academic year ends on 31 August.
