National student fee

In Spain every student at a public university pays fees. Prices are set by each autonomous community, so the same number of ECTS credits can cost more in one region than in another. The field also matters: health and engineering degrees usually cost more per credit than humanities or social sciences.

In 2023/24 a full year of a Bachelor's programme cost between EUR 518 and EUR 1,361 (on average about EUR 929). Master's students paid between EUR 591 and EUR 2,818, with an average of about EUR 1,802.

If you take longer than planned, it gets more expensive: credits and subjects you have to repeat are charged at a higher price, and in 2023/24 the top amounts reached EUR 8,461 (first cycle) and EUR 10,563 (second cycle). How big the increase is depends on the region. Some regions also charge international students differently.

Short-cycle vocational programmes (Ciclos Formativos de FP Grado Superior) have no tuition, only administrative fees, except in Madrid and Catalonia. Fee waivers and reductions exist for good academic results and for students from low-income households.

Student grants

Spain offers need-based grants (becas) to home and international students, full-time and part-time. There is no age limit, and the grant is paid in one instalment that covers 12 months.

The grant has two parts. The fixed part depends on family income, on where you live during the academic year and on excellent results. The variable part is calculated from your average grade and your income, so it is different for every student. A grant can also include a tuition fee waiver.

In 2023/24 need-based grants went up to EUR 9,286 a year, with a typical amount of about EUR 3,855. Part-time students can only apply for the fee waiver and the minimum variable component of EUR 60.
