National student fee

In the Netherlands every student pays a tuition fee, and there is no such thing as a free state-funded place. Most students pay the statutory fee set by the government, which in 2023/24 was EUR 2,314 a year in both the bachelor's and the master's cycle. If you are an EEA student starting your first bachelor's degree, you pay only half of the statutory fee in your first year (EUR 1,157 in 2023/24). In teacher training this half-rate applies to the first and second bachelor's year and to the first year of a teaching master's.

Students who are not entitled to the statutory fee pay an institutional fee set by the university or university of applied sciences itself, and only for them can the field of study change the price. Small-scale, intensive programmes with strict selection may charge higher fees. EEA students who choose a teaching degree or a second degree in healthcare pay the statutory fee instead of the institutional one, to attract more people to these professions.

Student grants

Full-time home students can get two kinds of grants: a universal basic grant and a need-based supplementary grant. Grants are paid for 12 months a year for the whole length of the study cycle, and you can receive them only until you turn 30. They can be combined with a student loan.

In 2023/24 the basic grant ranged from EUR 1,412 to EUR 3,519 a year, with EUR 1,412 as the most common amount. The need-based supplementary grant could reach up to EUR 5,325 a year, which was also the most common amount.

Loans

Full-time home students can take out a publicly subsidised student loan and combine it with grants. The age limit for getting a loan is 57. Eurydice gives no loan amounts or repayment details for 2023/24.

Tax benefit for student's parents

There are no tax benefits for parents of students.

Family allowances

Parents can receive family allowances, but only until their child turns 18.
