National student fee

In Malta full-time home students do not pay fees for first-cycle (Bachelor's) courses, whatever they study. All other students pay: home students on evening courses, part-time students and international students pay higher fees.

In the second cycle, most home full-time students also paid nothing in 2023/24, but fees could reach EUR 10,000 a year, and up to EUR 12,000 for students who study longer than planned. Fees also depend on the field of study.

International students can be exempted from tuition fees by the Ministry for Education, Sport, Youth, Research and Innovation. The University of Malta waives fees for its staff and their close relatives, for some international research students and for Postgraduate ISSI Scholarship holders, and reduces them for some international research students and for Tunisian and Palestinian nationals.

Student grants

Malta has need-based and universal grants for full-time home and EU/EEA students, with no age limit.

Students' Maintenance Grants consist of a yearly grant plus a stipend paid every four weeks; you need to apply in your first year. Students on MQF/EQF Level 6 courses also get a one-time grant at the start of the course. Students in proven hardship can get a supplementary maintenance grant, reviewed every year and taking into account how many people in the household are still studying.

In 2023/24 universal grants ranged from EUR 2,165 to EUR 5,315 a year (typically about EUR 3,433), and need-based grants from EUR 4,984 to EUR 8,134 a year (typically about EUR 6,251).

Loans

There are no publicly subsidised student loans.

Tax benefit for student's parents

Parents of students and students with their own income can get tax relief.

Family allowances

Family allowances are available for students up to the age of 20.
