National student fee

In Lithuania all students pay at least an admission fee, but students on state-funded places pay no tuition, no matter how long they study, how many credits they take or what they study. In 2023/24 the admission fee was typically EUR 50; institutions set it themselves and some charge nothing. For most home students on state-funded places this is the only fee.

Students on places that are not funded by the state pay tuition, which depends on the programme, plus the admission fee. The most expensive programme is aircraft piloting, an integrated five-year programme at one institution.

International students pay higher fees. Those with permanent residence can get a state-funded place, but the conditions are strict, so many study on non-funded places; there are exceptions for students from Ukraine and students of Lithuanian origin. First-cycle teacher-education programmes in priority fields are state-funded, but students pay the admission fee.

There are no fee waivers or reductions.

Student grants

Lithuania has need-based and merit-based grants for home full-time and part-time students. International students can get public grants only with a permanent residence permit. There is no age limit.

Need-based grants are provided by the state or by institutions, and the conditions are set by law. In 2023/24 they ranged from EUR 3,828 to EUR 5,832 a year, with EUR 3,828 being the most common. Merit-based grants are given by institutions under their own rules.

The state also funds grants for students in teacher-education programmes and in STEM programmes at regional institutions; these do not depend on study results.

Loans

Publicly subsidised loans are available to all students: a loan for tuition (up to the yearly fee you have to pay), a loan for living costs and a loan for exchange studies. Maximum amounts are the same for home students and eligible international students, who need a permanent residence permit.

Students who have reached the maximum amount, are on academic leave or have other loan debts cannot get the state guarantee (with some exceptions). The age limit is 65.

Tax benefit for student's parents

Parents of students and students with their own income can get tax relief. There is no age limit.

Family allowances

There are no family allowances for students' parents.
