National student fee

In Hungary fees are charged to all students, but many study on state-funded places. Your results can move you from a state-funded place to a self-funded one, or the other way round, and if you study longer than the standard length of the programme you become self-funded. Once you pay, your grades do not change the per-semester fee.

How much you pay depends on the type of institution, field, place of study, full-time or part-time mode and language of instruction. Full-time students in some disciplines pay more.

In 2023/24 first-cycle fees ranged from EUR 602 to EUR 7,071 a year, most commonly about EUR 1,571. In the second cycle (including integrated 5-6 year programmes), fees ranged from EUR 1,964 to EUR 7,071, most commonly about EUR 1,833.

Institutions decide on waivers and reductions themselves, based on academic results and/or social situation, and can add their own criteria.

Student grants

Hungary has need-based and merit-based grants for full-time and part-time home and international students, and you can receive both at the same time. There is no age limit.

In 2023/24 need-based grants ranged from EUR 60 to EUR 6,118 a year, with a typical amount of about EUR 437. Merit-based grants ranged from EUR 8 to EUR 17,614 a year, with a typical amount of about EUR 498.

Loans

Home and international students, full-time and part-time, can take two kinds of loans. The general-purpose loan has a state-subsidised interest rate; in the first cycle a full-time student can borrow from HUF 50,000 up to HUF 3,000,000, and in the second cycle from HUF 100,000 up to HUF 1,800,000.

The second loan is interest-free but only for fee-paying students and only to pay the programme cost. The age limit for loans is 45.

Tax benefit for student's parents

Parents of students can get tax relief, and students with their own income can get tax benefits until the age of 25.

Family allowances

Family allowances are available for students' parents.
