National student fee

The German-speaking Community of Belgium has just one higher education institution, the Autonome Hochschule Ostbelgien, which offers a few full-time first-cycle programmes. There are no second-cycle or short-cycle programmes, no part-time status and no programmes taught in a foreign language. Every student pays fees, and home and international students follow exactly the same rules. There are no waivers or reductions, and the fee does not change with your field of study or programme.

According to Eurydice data, the most common annual fee for full-time students in 2023/24 was EUR 450, with amounts ranging from EUR 100 to EUR 470. Weak results or a long study time do not push the fee up. If you need half a year more to finish, you pay a EUR 100 registration fee plus a EUR 150 tuition fee; if the extension is longer than half a year, you pay the regular EUR 450 like everyone else.

Student grants

Grants are need-based only and are awarded by the Ministry to home and international students who meet the conditions, which include family income. You can get one up to the age of 35, and it is paid monthly over 10 months. Grants can be combined with a loan.

According to Eurydice data, in 2023/24 grants ranged from EUR 362 to EUR 2,108 a year, most commonly EUR 663. About 43% of home full-time students received a grant.

Loans

Publicly subsidised loans are available to full-time home and international students, and whether you get one depends on your programme. A new scheme introduced in 2023 to tackle the shortage of skilled workers lets students in under-represented disciplines borrow EUR 350 a month interest-free.

The best part: if after graduating you work at least half-time in the German-speaking Community for 5 years within the following 10 years, you do not have to pay this loan back.

Tax benefit for student's parents

Parents of students can get tax benefits until the student turns 25.

Family allowances

Parents of students can receive family allowances; the source gives no further details on amounts or age limits.
