Student grants

Need-based grants are available to home full-time students, which means students with permanent residence in Slovakia, or, under certain conditions, those granted asylum, subsidiary protection or temporary refuge. Students with disabilities can keep receiving them even after exceeding the standard length of study. In 2023/24 the most common need-based grant was EUR 2,404 (all cycles together).

Merit-based grants are open to home and international, full-time and part-time students; the most common amount was EUR 693. Under the 2023 rules, 10% of full-time students could receive EUR 500, and at least 15% could receive on average EUR 1,200 in selected fields. There is no age limit for grants.

Loans

Publicly subsidised loans are available to home full-time and part-time students: Slovak citizens, Slovaks living abroad, EU citizens with permanent residence in Slovakia and their family members, and students granted asylum, subsidiary protection or temporary refuge. Loans can be combined with grants. In 2023/24, 417 students (0.44% of students at public universities) received a loan. Eurydice gives no loan amounts or repayment details.
