Student grants

Italy has need-based and merit-based grants for first- and second-cycle students, full-time and part-time, home and international. Amounts are the same for home and international students, they are usually paid in three instalments and there is no age limit.

Grants are awarded through calls published by the regional bodies for the right to education. The same calls can also offer subsidised meals and accommodation at controlled prices.

In 2023/24 grants ranged from EUR 2,554 to EUR 7,655 a year, with an average of about EUR 4,473.

There are also mobility programmes, such as the "Italian Erasmus", and local initiatives run by the regions. A grant cannot be combined with a publicly subsidised loan.

Loans

Publicly subsidised loans are available to home and international students, with no age limit. They are rare: about 0.03% of students had one in 2023/24. You cannot combine a loan with a grant.
